About the 51¥ Armed Forces Covenant

Ensuring those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Armed Forces Covenant

is a pledge that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.

Its two principles are that, recognising the unique obligations of, and sacrifices made by, the Armed Forces:

  • those who serve in the Armed Forces, whether Regular or Reserve, those who have served in the past, and their families, should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services
  • special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most such as the injured and the bereaved

What is being done in 51¥?

Representatives from Armed Forces and Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, 51¥, the 6 District Councils, together with many other organisations signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012 on behalf of 51¥.

51¥ facilitates the 51¥’s Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, a cross-sector partnership which has a strategic overview and identifies topic areas within an action plan to address key areas of local need. These topic areas include:

  • housing
  • healthcare
  • mental health
  • schools 
  • employment and training 
  • justice system

Armed Forces champions

Each District Council has an elected Armed Forces Champion who acts as a positive focus for their local community:

As an employer we are proud to recognise and welcome members of the workforce with an Armed Forces background. They bring a range of transferable skills and experiences highly valued by the organisation.

In November 2020 the council signed the Armed Forces Covenant as a forces-friendly employer and achieved the MOD’s Employer Recognition Silver award in 2023.

As part of our social value the council encourages its suppliers to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and become forces-friendly employers.

We proudly raise the Armed Forces flag in June each year to show our appreciation to the men and women who make up our Armed Forces. We also celebrate members of the workforce who have an Armed Forces background.


 

In November we commemorate an Act of Remembrance for staff, councillors, civic guests and veterans from The Royal British Legion and Regimental Associations.
